Chapter Sixteen

Nikita

He wasn’t sure if it was still considered stalking if he had Copley’s best interests at heart. Perhaps that was what stalkers told themselves before they snuck into someone’s bedroom.

Either way, he hadn’t been watching Copley’s apartment that long. He’d parked his ass on the curb a few hours before on the off chance he’d catch his sub coming home. It had been a physical blow when he’d realized that he hadn’t even known where Copley worked.

He’d been so focused on keeping their lives separate that he’d forgotten what he had promised himself on the first day on the outside. Hiding from Nestor shouldn’t have been his first priority, but somewhere along the line, he had convinced himself that his boss was more important than his life.

Fuck, he’d been a terrible Dom. Copley never should have had to go through any of those things, let alone be terrified about a debt that didn’t belong to him.

Three days in a shitty motel had cleared up a few things for him. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept on his own, and he was positive that he never wanted to do it again.

His guilt solidified until he wished he could take back every word that he’d said. It only grew worse when his fear of facing Copley and Maxim had overshadowed the grief, pure madness eventually driving him from the motel. He hadn’t been able to take another second of the sounds of his neighbors fucking through the walls while missing the comforting snoring.

He’d walked from the motel all the way back across town to Copley’s apartment, scraping the thin layer of snow off the curb before he’d sat down. That had been three hours before, when there had been still a hint of innocence to the night.

He’d never been afraid of the dark, not even when he had been a child. If he could have lived in the darkness and wrapped it around himself like a blanket, he gladly would have done so. People didn’t judge him when they were blind to his appearance. They didn’t fear him.

Even under the shadows between two streetlamps across from one of the shiftiest apartments in the neighborhood, he still got a few looks. The dealer who had scrounged up the courage to approach him had quickly scurried off when Nikita had looked up, the lights of a passing car illuminating his face.

Everyone feared him, whether it was because of his brother or not. The only two who didn’t, he’d driven away after he’d lost his control. He hadn’t thought he could live without Unkinked, but he’d realized he couldn’t live without those two instead.

He let out a sigh, leaning back to try to get blood into the frozen parts of his ass. The hookers just down the road were fucking champs compared to him, walking the streets every night without complaint.

The bus pulled up to the stop—probably the last one of the evening—and he leaned forward, biting his tongue as he searched for Copley in the crowd.
